With more than 18,000 animals coming into our care every year, our shelter is always in need of volunteers to help make the animals' stay as pleasant as possible, increase adoptions and provide foster care when needed. Volunteers are an invaluable component of our shelter and serve a number of important functions including walking dogs, socializing the cats, helping the public around the shelter, setting up special adoption events or calling people after they’ve adopted to answer questions. Volunteers really do make a difference!

Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) promotes volunteerism and helps 55-years-old volunteers find their perfect niche among approximately 100 affiliated community agencies in Sacramento, Placer and Yolo Counties. RSVP has connections to volunteer opportunities at the animal control and regulation, the SPCA, Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue, Puppy Love, Project Ride and Saddle Pals. Opportunities also are available at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center and the Discovery Museum’s Science Center.
