Free WiFi Access at the Sacramento International Airport – The Airport has teamed up with Google to offer complimentary WiFi in terminals A and B as well as some parts of the parking garage through January 15. County Holiday Office Closure – In observance of Veterans Day, Sacramento County offices will be closed on November 11, 2009. As always, emergency services will be available, and garbage pickup will continue. All offices will return to their normal business hours on Thursday, November 12.

Foster Grandparent Volunteer Receives Prestigious Award – L’Oreal Paris has awarded Ora Rakestraw, Sacramento County Foster Grandparent, the prestigious honor of Women of Worth 2009 for her volunteer efforts. As a recipient, the Foster Grandparent Program was awarded $5,000. You can help the Foster Grandparent Program receive an additional award of $25,000 by voting for Ora at the L’Oreal Women of Worth website. Voting starts November 9 and ends November 24.

Department of Human Assistance Office Hours Change – Effective Monday, November 16, lobby and reception hours are 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the 1725 28th Street Bureau. Clients with scheduled appointments who are in the building by 4 p.m. will be served. For more information, please visit DHA website.

Building Inspection and Development Services Front Counters Closing Fridays – Effective November 16, public counters serving building, construction and development customers will be closed on Fridays. Simple building permits may be purchased online and building inspections will be conducted. Note: Community Service Center counters will be open for other business. Congressional District 10 Election – Voters in the southern/Delta region of Sacramento County went to the polls on November 3 to select a replacement for former Representative Ellen Tauscher. Election results are available on the Voter Registration and Elections website.

Call Centers Changing Hours – Effective November 23, the utilities and information call centers will have new business hours. County Executive Announces Retirement – After more than a decade of service to Sacramento County, CEO Terry Schutten has announced his plans to retire at the end of the year. Read the details in the press release.

Save a Life, Designate a Driver – Last year in California, 1,112 people were killed by someone driving under the influence. New Animal Care Facility Open Longer Hours and During Weekends – Effective October 14, the new facility, located at 3839 Bradshaw Road, will stay open later during the week and during weekends. View the new schedule for specific hours or visit the Animal Shelter website.

Final Budget Approved by Board of Supervisors – Sacramento County Supervisors have reached agreement on a spending plan for the 2009-2010 fiscal year. Although the overall budget reflects a 20% reduction in funding to the County, the Board was able to restore some money to the Sheriff’s Department and Child Protective Services. Gibson Ranch County Park to Partially Close Beginning October 5 – Due to County budget restrictions, Gibson Ranch Regional Park will be closed to the public Monday - Wednesday beginning October 5 until further notice. Gibson Ranch will remain open Thursday – Sunday, 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. and operating hours may vary. For more information, view the news release.

Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) Transition to New Service Provider – The State of California is changing to a new service provider for the EBT system effective Monday, September 21. Clients will not be able to use their card or benefits (Food Stamps or cash) from Saturday, September 19 at 11 p.m. - Sunday, September 20 at 11 p.m. due to this change. Local Canine Hero – Tassie, our Agriculture Department's four legged staff member, scored a huge victory in preventing a potential pest infestation in Sacramento. Tassie detected about 100 Asian citrus pests inside a package containing Guavas and curry leaves shipped from Texas, where it had not been inspected before shipment. Memorial Fund for Sheriff’s Sergeant – Sergeant Kelley Lara, who was killed on her way to work last week, is survived by her husband and four young children, including triplets. The Sacramento County Deputy Sheriffs’ Association and its STAR 6 Foundation have set up a Memorial Fund in Sergeant Lara’s name through Exchange Bank. Government Employees Targeted by Phishing E-mail – A phishing scam e-mail targeting government employees is currently circulating. It appears to come from a FEMA gmail account (i.e. fema.Correspondence.Unit@gmail.com). See sample of e-mail. The e-mail contains a malicious PDF attachment named Updated Guidance. Once opened, two malicious files will be executed on the computer. If you receive this e-mail, please do not open the attachment.

Airport System’s “Big Build” Steams Forward – Despite the recession, Sacramento County’s Airport System has sold $480 million in bonds to continue funding for the airport expansion. Helping Parents Get Back on the Road – Sacramento’s Child Support Services staff is working to help restore driving privileges to parents who lost their licenses due to problems with support obligations. The “Get Back on the Road Again” campaign focuses on helping find solutions for families. For more information, view the press release.

Run or Walk Fundraiser for Sheriff’s K9 Association – The first 5K & 10K for Kaleo fundraiser will commence Sunday, August 23 at 8 a.m. This event is a fundraiser to cover medical bills for many of our retired K9 partners. This year’s event is named after Kaleo, who recently retired due to cancer and unforeseen medical expenses that the County could not cover. Workshop Planned on Development-Related Fees and Standards – An August workshop will highlight efforts to stimulate the development-related economy in Sacramento. Budget Cuts Reduce Staffing and Hours for Board of Supervisors & Clerk’s Offices – Beginning this Friday, July 10, the offices of the Board of Supervisors and the Clerk of the Board will be closed each Friday due to department budget cuts that have reduced the working hours of staff in both the Board of Supervisors’ District Offices and the Office of the Clerk of Board, which includes the Assessment Appeals Board and the County and Community Planning Commissions. The Board of Supervisors’ lobby will be closed to the public, and all services currently available at the public counter will be provided Mondays – Thursdays until further notice.

New Law Helps Consumers Make Healthier Food Choices – California now requires chain restaurants with 20 or more statewide outlets to provide nutritional information for all standard menu items. The information may be in a brochure at the point-of-sale, where food is ordered or posted on menus. The new law will help consumers make more informed, healthier choices. Oak Park Clinic Reopens – A unique local partnership will fund a much-needed health center in Oak Park. Recently closed due to budget cuts, "The Effort Oak Park Community Health Center" will provide a wide range of services beginning July 16. County partners include The Effort, Kaiser Permanente, Sacramento's Sutter Medical Center and the Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society. Alcohol Ban and Life Jacket Requirements in Effect July 3 – July 5 – Keep in mind that the alcohol ban within the waterway and shore from Hazel to Watt Avenues on the American River will be in effect over the long weekend. Sacramento County’s life jacket requirement for kids under the age of 13 will also be enforced. Park Rangers will be on duty to make sure visitors stay safe while having fun. Board of Supervisors Adopts Budget – Sacramento County Supervisors have agreed on a proposed budget for the 2009-10 fiscal year that will authorize spending until the final budget is adopted in September. The $4.3 billion dollar spending plan is nearly 20% below the amount of last year’s budget. Program cuts, layoffs and service reductions were part of the package, and additional cuts may be required after the State’s budget is approved. Board Meetings Cancelled – The Board of Supervisors will be on summer recess June 21 – July 11. Regularly scheduled meetings during that time period have been cancelled and will resume on Tuesday, July 14. View the Board Meeting Information web page for scheduled days and time.

First Death from H1N1 (Swine) Flu in Sacramento County – The H1N1 virus has claimed another life in California, this time in Sacramento County. Although the traditional flu season is winding down, due to continued flu activity in the area, you are urged to take actions to prevent the spread of germs. Celebrating a New Start on Life – 39 people who were formerly homeless are celebrating their graduation from the Mather Community Campus program. Armed with job training and stable housing, the graduates are entering the career world with support from a unique program funded by Sacramento County’s Department of Human Assistance. Local Creeks Photo Contest – Sacramento County Department of Water Resources is calling all amateur photographers to take photos of local creeks for a chance to be featured in the 2010 Sacramento County Creeks Calendar. Regional Parks Reminds Visitors to Stay Safe, Wear a Life Jacket on the American River this Weekend – Regional Parks wants to remind visitors to stay safe in and around County waterways this weekend by wearing a life jacket and leaving the alcoholic beverages at home. There will be a temporary ban on alcoholic beverages in the water and on the shoreline between Watt and Hazel Avenues. Public Weighs in as Budget Impacts are Presented – Community members joined the Board of Supervisors May 13 - 15 for a series of informational workshops outlining the impacts of budget cuts to a wide variety of County departments. Public safety, human, social and general government services will be reduced due to decreased funding for the upcoming fiscal year. Input from the public and county departments will be used by the County Executive's Office to prepare a recommended budget for the Board of Supervisors on June 9. Swine Flu Update from Sacramento County Public Health – No additional cases have been confirmed in Sacramento County. Five cases, all with mild symptoms, were previously confirmed. County Continues Informational Budget Workshops – Community members are welcome to attend a final workshop on Friday, May 15, to offer input and hear the impacts of expected budget cuts on county services first-hand. Public safety, human and social service reductions have been discussed at Wednesday and Thursday’s workshops. On Friday, a variety of general government programs, including elections, animal care and planning, will be in the spotlight. Bike Month Challenge – May is Bike Month and you are challenged to choose bicycling for work, errands and recreation. Log every bike-ridden mile for a chance to win prizes on the May is Bike Month website. The Capitol Bike Fest celebration is on Thursday, May 21 at the State Capitol with music, raffle prize for commuter bikes and bike shop booths. In support of Bike to Work Day, Regional Parks is holding a Park 'n' Ride event on Thursday, May 21, 6 a.m. - 10 a.m. with parking fees waived at four parkway locations.

Sacramento County Street Count Reports Decrease in Chronically Homeless – Department of Human Assistance conducts a homeless street count biennially in accordance with HUD funding requirements for homeless programs. The count was conducted on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 and according to the 2009 Homeless Count Summary Report, the 10-Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness helps many chronically homeless people obtain housing. Supervisors Proclaim April as Child Abuse Prevention Month – According to the Child Abuse Prevention Council of Sacramento, every minute of every day, a child is reported abused in California. Studies show a link between child abuse and greater risk for substance abuse, crime, suicide and premature death. Outstanding Volunteers of 2008 Recognized by Sacramento County – On Tuesday, April 21, 9:40 a.m. – 11 a.m., volunteers and volunteer groups will be recognized for their service. Sacramento County utilized more than 9,285 volunteers and students who donated 614,395 hours. The monetary value of the staggering contribution is $12,547,199. Second Installment of Property Tax Due – Second installment of 2008-2009 Sacramento County secured property taxes are due no later than Friday, April 10, 2009, without penalty. Late payments will incur a 10 percent penalty for each tax bill. Please read the news release for more detailed information.

Two-for-One Bunny Adoption Event on Saturday, April 11 – Partnering with local bunny adoption group, Friends of Unwanted Rabbits (FUR), the Animal Shelter is looking to place 66 bunnies, which were rescued from a single residence, in permanent homes. Human Assistance Office Closure Update – The Department of Human Assistance's 28th Street bureau will be open for regular business on Monday, January 12. We encourage clients and visitors who don't have a scheduled appointment to delay their visit until later in the morning due to anticipated high volume of visitors to the bureau.
