The new school year is hectic as kids and parents get used to their new surroundings and schedules. With their focus diverted, drivers need to be especially alert to children walking, crossing streets and riding their bikes. As well, kids can be difficult to see in front of schools and buses and demand extra caution when driving.
Things to be aware of:
It is illegal to drive around a school bus that has lights flashing. Slow down and stop for school buses with flashing yellow or red lights. Yellow lights mean the bus is preparing to stop, and red lights (and a STOP sign) mean children are getting on or off, and could be crossing in front of the bus. Only proceed once the lights have been turned off
Watch for lower speed limit signs around schools.
Look out for kids darting out into the street and double-check bike lanes before turning.
After school, take precaution around sports fields and parks.
As a driver, you must yield to any pedestrian crossing the street according to California Vehicle Code. Make eye contact with students waiting to cross so they know you can see them.
Drop children off as close to school as possible and on the same side of the street as the school.
To keep focus on the road, arrange for a specific time and place to pick up children after school.
Always obey the commands of crossing guards or bus drivers – they have clear views of students that drivers may not be able to see.
