Sacramento County
Department of Human Assistance (DHA) is activating its severe weather sheltering program ahead of extreme heat forecasted for this weekend.
With temperatures topping well over 100 degrees on Monday and overnight lows staying fairly warm, DHA outreach and navigation staff, in conjunction with homeless outreach partners, will be actively issuing motel vouchers beginning today. The respite program will remain active until Wednesday morning when temperatures are projected to drop measurably – both daytime and overnight.
Participants in the weather respite sheltering program will work with their referring party on transportation to the motel they receive a voucher for and are allowed to bring partners, pets and possessions with them for the duration of their stay. Capacity will depend on motel room availability at County’s partner motels.
DHA began this severe weather motel vouchers respite program in January 2021 in response to severe winter weather. This is the first heat event this program is being used for since it began. This program is not related to the severe weather guidance plan through the Office of Emergency Services.
