The 10th Anniversary of the Amgen Tour of California, the largest cycling event in the United States, races in to Sacramento this weekend. The Sacramento Sports Commission is hosting a free family-friendly block party on Friday, May 8 at 6 p.m. on the West Steps of the Capitol. The festivities include rider introductions, live music and a fireworks show.
The Stage 1 race begins on Sunday, May 10 in the heart of downtown Sacramento. This year’s 126.2-mile route begins at 10:50 a.m. at 11th and L streets. The Stage 1 route highlights the beauty of Sacramento County. The riders will depart downtown, cross the iconic Tower Bridge and head through West Sacramento and the small Delta towns of Clarksburg, Courtland and Walnut Grove. The race then turns to travel through Davis and Woodland, with a final exhilarating sprint in downtown Sacramento.
"Sacramento County is proud to welcome the 10th Anniversary of the Tour of California to our capital region. We are thrilled that this year’s route highlights the Sacramento River Delta, one of the gems of our community,” said Supervisor Phil Serna, Chairman of the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors.
Spectators can also enjoy the Women’s Stage 3 Circuit, a 34-mile sprint that begins at 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 10. After the women’s race, cyclists of all ages and abilities can join in the free Sutter Health Community Ride.
